Dating back to the iron age, Wednesbury takes its name from pagan times. The site of sixth century and eighth century battles in the Anglo Saxon period, coal pits in the Staffordshire town were first discovered in the 14th century and led to a rush to work in the mines. By the 17th century the white clay from nearby Monway Field was the basis for a fast developing local pottery industry. Industrialisation followed in the 18th century across England, and Wednesbury was no different with increased trade on the new Birmingham canal and the coming of the railways as well as a local tram service in the 1880s. A steel works for many years was a major employer. Visit the old market in the Market Place conservation area, or why not sample a taste of the town's history at the Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery?
