South Ockendon is a Church of English parish with a population of about 18, 069 people in the Thurrock borough of Essex, right on the border of Greater London. It used to be a village centred around the Village Green, the Norman Church of St Nicholas of Myra and the famous Royal Oak restaurant and pub.
South Ockendon is an old council estate with vast green spaces around the area. The 'Mollands Farm' to the south of the village was used as a rehabilitation facility for disadvantaged and educationally challenged people but the farm later developed into a mental hospital which was later demolished to form an estate- The Brandon Groves Estate with extensive lawns and paved roads.
For the provision of secondary education, The Ockendon Academy is quite famous. Thomas Bennett Sturgeon formed the basis of wool and lamb economy thereby importing merino sheep into Australia and New Zealand.
