Manningtree, which means 'many trees', is a civil parish and a town in the Tendring District of Essex, and lies on the River Stour. It has been claimed to be the smallest town in England with a population of just 911 people. The town grew around the wool trade and had a thriving shipping trade in timber, corn, and coal which later declined with the construction of the railways. The Manningtree railway station is directly linked to London, Norwich, and Harwich.
The buildings in the centre of town have Georgian facades obscuring their earlier origins. The notable buildings include the town's library originally built as a public hall but later used for public entertainment, and the oldest Methodist Church located on the South Street.
Margaret Thatcher worked for the local company BX Plastics and Matthew Hopkins, the Witch-Finder self-styled General, lived in Manningtree.
