This sprawling industrial west London suburb dating back to the ninth century is dominated by the busy A40 dual carriageway. With big factories located here over the years, including Hovis, J Lyons, and a glassworks and chemical factory in the more distant past, big manufacturers were drawn to Greenford because of the nearby Grand Union canal and the Great Western railway main line. Their presence transformed Greenford from its mainly agricultural nature, as did the opening of the Paddington branch of the canal. The residential character of the area is dominated by mainly 1930s and 1950s properties. Greenford was the unlikely place to first hear the then up-and-coming rock band The Who playing their first gig at the now long gone Oldfield Tavern in 1964. Places of interest in the area include The Heritage Centre, with its large collection of 20th century household items, and the nearby London Motorcycle Museum.
