Volkswagen's entry into the highly competitive compact-crossover segment comes in the form of the Tiguan. The Golf-based 4X4 (it's also available in two-wheel drive) went on sale in 2007 - and has since proven popular among consumers around the world. The most popular model in the UK uses a 2.0-litre diesel engine with 138bhp. Other, more powerful engines are available, but motoring journalists say that this motor deserves its place at the top of the sales charts as it's the ideal trade-off between power, efficiency and price. It's good to drive too, and the cabin is adequately spacious. Off-road ability is limited though (not that this matters in a car like this), and it's a bit pricey.
