If you want a VW, but find the three-door Golf a bit "vanilla" - the Scirocco coupé could be the car for you. The original Giugiaro-designed model was introduced in 1974 - it was based on the Golf's platform, but comprehensively re-engineered to offer a sportier drive. The second generation was launched in 1982, remaining in production until 1992. The coupé was effectively replaced by the Corrado in VW's lineup, although that was aimed further upmarket. After a 16-year hiatus, the Scirocco returned in 2008. The latest model is good looking and accomplished dynamically - the only drawbacks being a cramped rear cabin.
