Verwood is a large town in Dorset. Its population is 15,000, making it the largest town in Dorset without an Upper School. The town was first mentioned in scripture in 1288, but was known as 'Beau Bois.' It did not receive the name Verwood until 1329 which is believed to have developed from 'Fairwood' or 'The Fayrewood.'
The town is home to Verwood's Concert Brass, a successful brass band. The band was West of England 4th Section champions for 2005 and 2006. This resulted in trips to the National Brass Band Finals of Great Britain on both occasions where they finished 6th and 7th. In more recent years the band competes in the 1st section, the second highest ranking. They perform many gigs in the local and surrounding areas including popular venue The Hub.
