Hidden in a Stevenage warehouse is a big chunk of Martian desert. This unassuming Hertfordshire town, just off the A1(M) and sandwiched between Welwyn and Letchworth, is where they test the Mars rovers before shooting them off to the Red Planet. Space is big business in Stevenage as it plays host Astrium, the third-biggest space tech company in the world.
Around 84,000 people live in Stevenage. It has fast rail links into London King's Cross and Moorgate. Luton airport is within easy reach, with flights to over 90 destinations around the globe.
Stevenage underwent rapid development in the 1950s and 60s, becoming one of the trailblazing 'new towns' of the period. It's not all concrete though: in the middle of the town lies Fairlands Valley Park, 120 acres of green open space, with a boating and fishing lake. Other leisure facilities include an 18-hole golf course, a swimming centre and an arts and leisure centre.
