The seaside resort town of Southend-on-sea is located on the southern coast of Essex in the Thames Gateway. The town rose to fame in the 19th century as a getaway for Londoners wanting a trip to the seaside. However, as with similar UK coastal resorts, the town saw a sharp decline in tourism from the 1960's onwards.
Today the town has a population of 165,000 and is one of the most densely populated areas of the country outside of london. The town is also home to London's 6th airport at London Southend Airport located on the northern edge of the town.
Amazingly, the town still claims to have the longest Victorian Era pleasure pier in the world, standing proud at 1.3 miles in length.
