In the east end of London not far from Hackney Marshes and the site of the Olympic Park Chingford grew exponentially in the 1930s. With a big shopping district at Chingford Mount this suburban part of London, where generations of East Enders moved out to from more central areas, retains a distinctive 1930s Art Deco aspect to its local housing style, although notable buildings including the local Odeon cinema, an original Oscar Deutsch building, was demolished in the 1970s. The Chingford Mount Cemetery is where the notorious Kray twins were buried. The area was badly bombed during the second world war. A V2 rocket hit Chingford Mount in October 1944. A dip at the top of the Mount near the Old Church is all that remains of the crater left by the attack.
