Shropshire town Shrewsbury, with a population of just under 100,000, is a bustling market town with medieval features including timber-framed buildings. With many listed buildings the town is a must for tourists interested in history and culture, and worth seeing for example is the 11th century castle and former Benedictine monastery.
With Wales only a small distance off, the town has a unique perspective on both Wales and England from a historic point of view. Shrewsbury sometimes can be portrayed as a remote outpost, but nothing could be further from the truth. Worth visiting is the riverside park known as The Quarry. Former Private Eye editor Richard Ingrams attended Shrewsbury school as did other key writers for the magazine and Monty Python star, Michael Palin.
