With around 73,000 people living in Salford proper (that is within the bigger City of Salford) the town has seen considerable change of late with the influx of many media companies, including the BBC setting up new studios at MediaCity. However, Salford has been slowly evolving through a co-ordinated process of civic development long before MediaCity, often working in tandem with local universities. Salford's roots though are in factories and in its hard earned status as an inland port.
Places to see in the area include the Lowry Centre arts complex, Bridgewater Canal, LS Lowry gallery and Ordsall Hall. Painter Lowry is of course the town's most famous son, but others from Salford include actors Albert Finney and Roy Powell.
