On the River Don in Yorkshire, Rotherham is half a dozen miles from Sheffield. During the industrial revolution it was a centre of iron ore production, ironworks, and later milling. Like Sheffield, Rotherham became known for the skilled knowledge base of its factories workers, a factor that kept the town's reputation high for many years.
Places to visit include Clifton Park Museum and the Magna Science Adventure Centre. Famous people from the town include actor Dean Andrews, musician Christopher Wolstenholme of the band Muse, and former England goalkeeper David Seaman and foreign secretary William Hague.
