The counterpoint of three South Welsh Valleys (namely Rhondda, Cynon and Taff), this county borough of South Wales has a very high percentage of Welsh speakers. With Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to the south and Caerphilly to the east, this region is also very well connected.
An area built on the coal industry, many deep seam coal mines fell into decline but open cast mining remains a strong industry in the area. The characteristic and closely woven Victorian terraces also remain, proving housing for the miners today. The principal towns in the area are Abadare, Pontypridd and Talbot Green. Abadare is a pretty yet industrial town, nestling in the Cynon Valley, and it serves the local community well, while Pontypridd remains a functional town 19km north of Cardiff.
