The 406 went on sale in 1996, and was met with widespread praise. It narrowly missed out on European Car Of The Year in 1996, but that did nothing to dampen sales - the 406 was a hit for Peugeot, something they struggled to replicate with its successor, the 407. Coupé and estate models of the 406 were also launched before the car underwent a mid-life refresh in 1999. The 406's highlights included a fantastically smooth ride and nicely equipped cabin. Most of the engines available performed well, but the smallest struggled to haul the 406's considerable bulk. Sales were halted in the UK in 2004.
