Possibly one of the newest towns in the country, Peterlee was built under the New Towns Act of 1946 in County Durham. With completion finished in 1948, this town became a residential area for coal miners and their families. This is due to the strong ties with Sunderland and Hartlepool.
For the past 40 years, Peterlee has set up an annual Peterlee show. This show contains various activities for the entire family. These include a circus performance as well as workshops, a dog show, football and rugby tournaments, a fun run, a funfair and marquees. There is also a parade which stretches from the Leisure Centre to the Show Field accompanied by Jazz, Pipe and Brass bands. New this year is a mini food festival filled with cuisine from gingerbread men to samosas.
