The Japanese car manufacturer started off with calling its cars 'Datsuns'. It introduced these to the US market in the 1960s but they were not a success story until Datsun changed its name to Nissan in 1984. Nissan has factories globally and has had safety-problems recently. In May 2011, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated the 2007 and 2008 Altimas for leakage issues, and in 2012, Nissan announced it the recall of roughly 250,000 vehicles worldwide with affected models including the Juke, Serena, Patrol, Tiida, Micra, Infiniti M and QX models. The Nissan Note and Qashqai in the UK are both produced at their UK factory in Washington, Tyne & Wear and in 2013, a new car, the Invitation, will also be built here, keeping jobs in the North East.
