One of the most prestigious districts of central London, Mayfair has Shepherd Market just off Piccadilly at its heart, originally the site of a 17th and 18th century fair, although more recently known as an upmarket red light district. Much of the area is owned by the Duke of Westminster whose family name Grosvenor lends its name to one of Mayfair's most important squares, where the US embassy has been based for many years. The Rothschild banking family and the Crown Estate also have large holdings in the area. The area is also home to many embassies around Curzon Street, luxury hotels on Piccadilly, and has been a location for many hedge funds, as well as high end retail on Bond Street and office buildings as well as casinos. The Royal Academy of Arts on Piccadilly and the Handel House Museum are notable visitor attractions.
