Mansfield, a town of just under 70,000 in Nottinghamshire, was known throughout history as a base for kings hunting in nearby Sherwood Forest.
Historically, Mansfield and surrounding areas supported busy mining industries, but nowadays the council is encouraging small and local business growth. Nottingham is only a 30-minute drive away, so some residents of Mansfield commute to the city, where more than 50 national and regional companies have headquarters.
In addition to Mansfield museum in the town centre and numerous parks, there are varied attractions in the nearby countryside. Residents of Mansfield have easy access to The Peak District and legendary Sherwood Forest. Mansfield's 700-year legacy as a market town carries on today as multiple street markets are held weekly; it still has one of the country's largest open-air markets.
