Maidstone is located in the northern part of Kent, just off the M20 on the way to Dover. The county town of Kent, with a population of 75,000 Maidstone is the administrative centre for the region and home to the county's courts and council.
The River Medway, once the life blood for the town's heavy industrial past, divides the town and flows into the Thames Estuary. Once a centre for milling and smelting, today the work force has moved towards the service sector, with 19% of the population working in retail.
In keeping with their trend for naming craters for small towns, NASA named such an astronomical feature found on the surface of Mars after the Kent town.
