Clustered around the picturesque gatehouse of its castle ruins, the market town of Hertford sits at the confluence of four rivers, among beautiful water meadows that teem with wildlife. Before the Norman Conquest, the River Lea formed the boundary between Saxon Wessex and the Danelaw, the domain of the Viking invaders.
Hertford is home to around 28,000 people. There's shopping at the Bicherley Green precinct, as well as a wide range of independent traders and chain stores and a Saturday market in the town centre. Stansted Airport is a 30-minute drive away and London is an hour away by train.
Hertford hosts an annual music festival. Other attractions include a museum, theatre, the Corn Exchange concert and exhibition venue, the Courtyard Arts Centre, a swimming pool, leisure centre and the wide, green open spaces of Hartham Common.
