Gateshead is a town of just under 80,000 people located across the River Tyne from Newcastle Upon Tyne, with which it forms the urban core of Tyneside.
Over the past decade, the town and especially the Quayside has been redeveloped, with the aim of earning Gateshead city status. Excellent bus and train services operate within Gateshead and to Newcastle.
The Angel of the North, Anthony Gormley's iconic steel sculpture, is one of the most famous symbols of the town. Victorian Saltwell Towers is owned by the town and located within Saltwell Park in the middle of town. South Shore Road, where Gateshead has revived its culture with the Sage music centre and Baltic contemporary arts building, won hippest street award in a Google Maps 2011 competition. The area is key to the Gateshead social scene, as it hosts numerous festivals and offers residents excellent dining and drinking options. Perfect for shopaholics, Gateshead's MetroCentre is the largest shopping centre in the European Union.
