Nestled on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in northern Cheshire, Ellesmere Port (population 65,000) is known primarily as an industrial town. It boasts the UK's only Vauxhall plant, where, with new investment from owner General Motors, the new generation of Astra cars will be produced starting in 2015. Stanlow Refinery, the second-largest oil refinery in the country, is responsible for one-sixth the UK's petrol supply. However, it isn't all industrial hustle-bustle in Ellesmere Port; a wealth of retail and entertainment options mean the town is a destination for families and shoppers alike. Key draws are the Blue Planet Aquarium, National Waterways Museum, Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, and the second-largest Marks and Spencer in the world, opened in August 2012. For day trips, residents of Ellesmere Port are spoilt for choice: the town is located less than 10 miles from the historic city of Chester and has convenient transport links into the Liverpool city centre.
