The city of Chester is home to around 121,000 people. It is roughly 40 miles from Manchester and 190 miles from London. Legend says the city was founded by Noah's great grandson, 240 years after the Biblical flood. Modern Chester is served by the M53 and has rail links to Liverpool, Manchester and London Waterloo.
Chester boasts a Roman amphitheatre, a cathedral and its own university. The city centre is famous for its Rows, galleried arcades of shops whose half-timbered appeal dates back to 1278. The town has plenty of eateries and pubs, several theatres, two cinemas and a variety of nightclubs.
Local attractions include the Roman and medieval city walls, Chester Zoo, the Grovesnor Museum, Tatton Park 's 1,000-acres of parkland, boat trips on the River Dee and the city's spooky ghost tour. Chester racecourse also offers a packed programme of events.
