The Cumbrian city of Carlisle on the River Eden is home to around 72,000 people and sits close to the border with Scotland. Once a garrison town and fortress for the Romans, the city boasts a fine medieval castle, cathedral and guildhall.
Home to the University of Cumbria, Carlisle lies on the West Coast mainline, with good rail links to Glasgow, Newcastle and London. The city is handy for the M6, M61 and M62.
The mainly pedestrianised city centre offers many independent shops and national brands, as well as the award-winning Laines Shopping Centre. Carlisle's Victorian covered market trades from Monday to Saturday.
Local attractions include the Tullie House Museum and Gallery, The Sands Theatre, LaserQuest, ten-pin bowling and Carlisle's famous racecourse. The city has two cinemas, a good mix of restaurants and clubs and a wide choice of pubs.
