The Essex town of Basildon lies 30 miles east of London. It benefits from a rail link to London Fenchurch Street and is handy for the M25.
Basildon was developed as a new town after 1949, absorbing four small villages to ease the housing shortage. Today, 102,400 people live in the area, making it the largest populated district in Essex.
Basildon is served by the Eastgate and Westgate shopping centres and two open-air markets. Other amenities include the Towngate Theatre and the Festival Leisure Park, nicknamed "Bas Vegas", with its 12-screen cinema and bowling arcade. Basildon's Sporting Village boasts a 50-metre swimming pool. The town also has an athletics stadium. There's plenty of green space to enjoy, including the Langdon Hills and Wat Tyler Country Parks.
Basildon's economy is boosted by four enterprise parks. Ford motors, tractor makers Case New Holland and retail giants Argos all provide local employment.
