Barnsley in Yorkshire built its wealth on mining. Around 220,000 people live in the area. The town has direct rail links to Leeds, Sheffield and Doncaster. It is the meeting point of the M1, the M62 and the A1(M).
Local attractions include Cannon Hall country park, the Cooper Gallery, Elsecar Heritage Railway, the RSPB wildlife reserve at Old Moor and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The town has a cinema and two theatres. There's swimming, golf, football and a gym at the Metrodome leisure centre.
Barnsley has five separate markets and a lively town centre with specialist retailers in the boutiques of the Arcade and big name brands clustered around the Alhambra Centre. There's out-of-town shopping too, at the Peel Centre retail park.
Barnsley enjoys a vibrant nightlife, with many pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs. The town centre's Taxi Marshalls help exhausted revellers get home safely.
