A funicular railway connects the two parts of the Shropshire town of Bridgnorth. The Low Town began life as a port on the banks of the River Severn, overlooked from the towering sandstone cliffs above by the castle and churches of the High Town.
About 12,000 people live in Bridgnorth. Many small independent and specialist shops line the town's streets, but there are also many major high street names. There are plenty of pubs and several regular markets, including a livestock market and one beneath the Town Hall, an unusual building raised above street level on brick pillars.
Local attractions include the gardens around the castle ruins, Upton Cresset Hall and the Severn Valley steam railway, which runs for 16 miles beside the river. You could also visit the Northgate and Childhood and Costume museums.
