Alfreton is a former mining town in Derbyshire in the Midlands, whose name is thought to derive from the Saxon King, Alfred, who founded the town. It is close to the M1, which connects it to London, Sheffield and Nottingham.
About 8,000 people live in Alreton, which has many 18th century buildings, including Alfreton Hall, built in about 1724. Alfreton also boats another historic gem, St Martin's church, which dates back to the 13th century.
Much of Alfreton's money came from its coal mines, and the people suffered badly when these were closed in the sixties. However, times have changed and now it has a bustling town centre with a mixture of banks, shops and restaurants as well as plenty of entertainment venues.
Benjamin Outram, a civil engineer famed for his pioneering canal and tramway designs was born in Alfreton.
